The Sex Pistols is punk rock band from London, England. Schoolmates Steve Jones (g.) and Paul Cook (ds.) formed the band in 1972. Glen Matlock (b.) joined the band in 1974, followed by Johnny Rotten (vo.) in 1975. In November 1975, the band made an official debut performance as the Sex Pistols. Their simple rock & roll sound combined with rebellious lyrics, outrageous fashion, and frequent scandals intentionally staged for media attention quickly caught public attention, but they evoked hostility among conservatives, who often protested at their concert venues to stop the performance.
After signing with a major label EMI, the band released their first single, Anarchy in the U.K. & I Wanna Be Me in 1976. The contract was terminated, however, after the band was accused of letting out a torrent of banned words on TV. Next, the band signed with A&M Records and recorded another single, God Save the Queen, but withdrew from the contract once again before the single’s release. In 1977, they released their only studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, which became No. 1 on the UK hit chart. In the same year, basist Glen Matlock left the band due to frictions with Johnny Rotten and over other differences. As his successor, Sid Vicious, who was an old friend of Rotten, joined the band. With the inclusion of Vicious, the Pistols’ star appeal was fortified. During the first US tour in 1978, Johnny Rotten, who became disillusioned, left the Pistols. Rotten’s departure caused the sudden cancellation of the US tour and dissolution of the band in effect. In 1979, Sid Vicious succumbed to drug overdose. He was only 21.
In 1996, the original members of the Sex Pistols reunited and staged a world tour. In 2002, they reunited for the second time. In 2006, they were nominated for entry to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but they rejected the award. In 2007, the band reunited for the third time and conducted a world tour. In 2008, the Pistols performed at Summer Sonic, a rock festival in Japan.
